Welcome On this page we have some interesting links about the
Christian faith plus our own Rough Guide to Christianity. To explore the Rough Guide, please
click on one of the topics below. Jesus /God / Church / What is a Christian?/The Bible God It’s
hard to fully explain but who would expect to be able to explain God fully? We could
only real know about God if he revealed himself and that is precisely
what Christians believe God has done in Jesus. God
became man and lived among us to show us what He was really like. Jesus
uniquely was fully man and fully God. His
character, his lifestyle, and the miracles he performed all bore out the astonishing
claim that God has appeared on earth in person. Read on to find more about
him…. Jesus A view of Jesus from 375AD People react strongly to Jesus, either for
or against. In Bible days some people loved him so much they were willing to
leave family, friends, and job to follow him. Others hated him so much that
they plotted to kill him. Some found his teaching too strong. Too challenging. Too
demanding. Too threatening. Others found his behaviour too unconventional and
shocking. But, others were drawn to him. Meeting
him was a liberating, life-changing experience. They were never the same
again. They never wanted to be the same again. That still happens today. Three years after he started his life’s
work, a friend betrayed him. Falsely convicted on trumped-up charges, he was
nailed by his hands and feet to a piece of wood, and left to die in the
blazing heat while criminals and passers-by heaped insults on his head. There has never been a cover-up about the
cross. In fact his followers parade it, flaunt
it even. They sing about it and, in the words of one of his apostles, they glory
in it. Why?
Christians believe that Jesus won a great victory in the midst of his
greatest defeat. Picture the cross. Picture yourself there. On the cross, I
mean. Christians believe that when Jesus died, he died in our place. Why? To take
the punishment that we rightly deserved so that we could be forgiven and set
free. The cross was the greatest act of love in the history of the world. How do we know this? Three days after his death Jesus was alive again. His
friends saw him, touched him and even shared a meal with him. 500 people saw
him alive on one occasion alone. Jesus had come through death and lived to
tell the tale. His resurrection proved he had won the victory. He is alive now, changing lives now.

Jesus, God, and Christianity To find out how to become a Christian, try this site Church Say the word ‘church’ and most people
think of a Gothic building with a steeple and stained glass windows, but
really the church is the people and not the building. One way of looking at the church is to
say it is a family, of people who are all related to each other through their
relationship with their father, God and his son, Jesus. The church is not perfect – far from it –
it is made up of fallible, sinful, human beings. To say you are a Christian
and a member of the church is not to claim to be better than anyone else. It
is more like a honest admission of failure and need. It’s about facing up to what’s wrong in
your life (what the Bible calls sin) and starting to lead a new life (what
the Bible calls repentance) in the family of God’s church. What is a Christian? A Christian is someone who follows Jesus
and believes in him. Doing good, living in a Christian country
(or even a Christian family), or even going to church cannot make you a Christian.
Being a Christian is more personal than that. It’s about a relationship with
Jesus. The Bible The Bible is not just one book but a
library of books written over a period of several hundred years. Who wrote it? Christians believe that the bible has dual authorship - it
was written by a collection of individuals and it was written by God
who inspired the individual writers. This, Christians believes accounts for
the diversity of the Bible – many different books written in a different ways
– and it’s unity – one underlying message or story line that derives from its
single author, God. Because the Bible was inspired by God,
Christians believe that as the word of God the Bible has unique authority and
power. If you want to try the Bible for
yourself, get a good modern translation (available from any bookshop) and
start with one of the Gospels, say Mark or John. These are the eyewitness
accounts of the men who knew Jesus and followed him. |
